How can I be more confident on the phone?
Get a phone routine
Some people feel unconfident on the phone, feeling that they don’t know what to say, so here are a couple of tips:
Answering: Work out a routine for answering the phone where you always have pen and paper nearby and you always ask who is calling and write down their name because if you’re trying to remember the name of the person you’re talking to you’ll be less confident, distracted by the process.
Put the time of the call down too and, if its the kind of call where you need to
remember things, make notes as you talk -
Calling: If you’re making a call, note down the essential points that you want to get over. This is particularly useful if it’s something you feel unconfident about, perhaps an insurance claim or a difficult negotiation with a garage for example.
Posture: We touch on this in the body language section of The Confidence Book – just remember: how you stand or sit makes a difference to how you feel and how you sound.
