I’m just not a confident person - can I learn to become one?

Don’t believe your own propaganda!

Many people have an idea that others are ‘Confident People’ and that they themselves are ‘Unconfident’, but I don’t think confidence works like this.

Our sense of inner confidence changes depending on the situation. You may be very confident at writing computer code (or gardening or decorating or whatever), but not very confident with people or with a particular group of people. Or you might be very confident with a small group of trusted friends but find it difficult to address larger groups of people.

So confidence isn’t about feelings, its about doing - that is to say, it’s about identifying where you feel a lack of confidence is holding you back and finding small, practical and achievable ways forward.

That’s the approach taken in The Confidence Book and throughout this website.

So, don’t believe your own propaganda, and don’t wait until you ‘feel right’, decide what you want to achieve and work out a strategy for getting there.

As a first step, why not post a specific confidence question to the Confidence Clinic?
